Energy Management
Energy management surveys and feasibility studies have been completed for hundreds
of projects ranging from simple evaluation of insulation levels, to alternative
energy, heat reclaim, geothermal heat pumps, and high performance controls for
buildings.
Avalon is registered under the BC Green Building Retrofit Program as an approved
Owner’s Representative, and is a Certified Consultant in BC Hydro’s Power Smart
Alliance. Avalon is a member of the Canada Green Building Council; accredited
under LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Program by the US Green
Building Council.
Bob Landell is presently in his third year as Energy Manager for the Vancouver Island Health
Authority, South Island. He is also the Power Smart Energy Manager for Camosun College.
Awards
- An award of Special Recognition in 1991 from BCBC for contributing to their Corporate Energy
Management Award (1st Place, world-wide) from the Association of Energy Engineers.
- In November of 2005, Mr. Landell received an award of recognition from BC Hydro for
contributions to their Power Smart Program.
- Spectrum Community School (winner of the ASHRAE Regional Technology Award for northwest
North America in 1990),
- Our design of a ground-coupled chilled water system at the Butchart Gardens won ASHRAE
Regional Technology Award in 2000.
- Avalon’s Mosaic Project (Fort St) won The National Post Design Exchange Silver Award
(2000) for Built Environments, Grande Projects, and The Canadian Home Builders
Construction Achievements & Renovations of Excellence Silver Award (2000).
- Avalon’s Dodds Funiture project won the Real Estate Victoria New Commercial Building Award in 2002.
Energy Studies
Power Smart Energy Studies have recently been completed on The Royal BC Museum,
The Victoria General Hospital, and the BC Legislative Precinct Central Steam and
Chilled Water Plant, The Nanaimo RCMP Building, Victoria City Hall, the Victora
Public Works Yard and the Crystal Pool. BC Hydro Power Smart New Building Design
Studies have been completed on The VEFRA Building (finalist for BC Hydro 1993 award),
Lambrick Secondary School, Database Filetech Building, Gateway Village, Nootka Court
BCBC Lease Area, and Myra Systems. We are commencing studies of Malaspina University-College
and the District of Elkford, B.C.
NRCan Energy Studies: An Energy Audit of CFB Esquimalt was completed in March 2000 for
NRCan’s Office of Energy Efficiency. A Greenhouse Gas Audit and Organisational Analysis
was conducted on the Canadian Coast Guard ship John P. Tully and April 2000. The
Victoria General Hospital was audited in 2002, and various projects have been, and are
being implemented. DDC system reviews have been completed on various hospitals for NRCan.
Building Improvement Studies
BC Hydro Power Smart Building Improvement Studies have been completed on The Strathcona
Gardens Recreation Centre (including an arena), The Kerry Park Recreation Centre (including
an arena), the Victoria Law Courts, The Butchart Gardens, Harbour Centre, Windsor Court,
Tillicum Mall, Mr.Grocer-Duncan, Hartwig Court, and The Harbour House Hotel. A High
Performance Building Study is underway The Victoria DryDok facility.
Upgraded Facilities
Other facilities which we have upgraded include Spectrum Community School (winner of the
ASHRAE Regional Technology Award for northwest North America in 1990), The Richard Blanshard
Building (see BC Hydro's
success story), Victoria City Hall, Government House, and the Victoria Youth Detention Centre.
Avalon designed and managed an extensive energy retrofit to The Victoria Professional Building
in 1999, and a larger energy retrofit for Victoria’s TD Bank Building in 2001. Our design of
the ground-coupled chilled water system at the Butchart Gardens won the ASHRAE Regional
Technology Award in 2000.
Full Energy Accounting services have been provided for all of the City of Victoria’s buildings
(3 years), all of the School District of Greater Victoria’s buildings (3 years), and the Capital
Health Region for 2 years.
